Q&A: How much data does a normal wifi router send when data is not being requested?

Posted by admin

Question by Justin: How much data does a normal wifi router send when data is not being requested?
So I brought my laptop to school today and hooked up to their public WiFi, curious, I wanted to see if they were spying on me while I wasn't requesting data. I took a screenshot of the network usage

i54.tinypic.com/2mqvvyx.png

As you can see, I wasn't requesting data, but still data was being sent. I think that they were trying to bug my system, but because I run ubuntu and there program wouldnt work, they kept retrying to send it. I could also be a heartbeat check, but wouldn't there be upload if it was? Is this data rate within the normal domain?

I'm kind of paranoid about this whole thing due to recent invasions of privacy though webcams.

Best answer:

Answer by AJ
Highly unlikely. The average school IT guy knows squat and would have no reason to break the law by attacking some student's laptop (if he even knew how to).

Run Wireshark and look at the traffic next time. It's probably just ARP broadcasts.

I use SmartFTP and it usually is no problem if you are using the correct FTP address (ftp://www.example.com) for access to your account, the correct UserName and PW for that account. Godaddy.com should have given you all that info when you signed up.

BBB Flooded With Complaints On 2 Auto Auction Sites
Stars-Automart, Autoaven Sent Cease And Desist Letters
POSTED: 12:41 pm MDT August 11, 2009
DENVER -- The Denver office of the Better Business Bureau said its telephone helpline has been jammed with calls from people across the country who are asking about two auto sales Web sites that claim to be headquartered in Denver.
According to the BBB, calls have been nonstop and the BBB has sent a "cease and desist" notice regarding trademark infringement to the company because of a fake BBB report the sites link to that falsely shows the company with an A+ rating.
The two Web sites list one physical address as 10701 W. Sixth Ave, but that address actually belongs to BBB Accredited business, Automotive Avenues, Inc. Another link goes to 3925 Monaco Parkway, which actually belongs to Cintas Document Management -- a paper shredding company.

The two Web sites, www.stars-automart.com and www.autoaven.com, claim to offer sales of repossessed vehicles.
The BBB said customers complain that once a majority payment is sent via MoneyGram to a Denver address, the company ceases communication. The company has not responded to the BBB.
An Internet check shows the two domain names are registered to a private registration company in Sunnyvale, Calif.
The BBB said it sent out the warning because on-delivery and Internet auction fraud were the top two complained-about fraud types at the Internet Crime Complaint Center.
"The BBB takes complaints very seriously and does not want any more consumers to be victimized," a news release stated.
TheDenverChannel attempted to contact the Web sites without success. The phone number listed on the site goes to a recording, which suggests callers contact them by e-mail. The same section of the stars-automart.com Web site lists a James Stewart as the owner.
To protect from online scams, the BBB has the following suggestions:
• Verify any organization credentials with the organization directly, (BBB, AutoTrader, Consumer Reports logos, etc.)
• Check the company’s BBB report at www.denver.bbb.org or by calling 303-758-2100. Only do business online with websites you are familiar with and that have a positive track record.
• Make sure the website has a privacy policy. It will contain agreements on how the information you provide on the website will be used and kept private and secure. Print this and keep it in your records.
• The privacy policy may also contain the company’s mailing address. Only do business with companies that provide a sure method of contact, should something go wrong.
• Do not wire transfer any payment. Wired funds cannot be traced and therefore cannot be recovered if you are a victim of fraud.
• If you have become a victim of fraud, contact your BBB and the Internet Crime Complaint Center at www.ic3.gov to file a complaint.

Please dont fall for this and report them to law enforcement

hopefully yahoo will prevent all the pro scammers from entering data on this site.
I am only trying to warn people that the scammers come on yahoo and say that they are a good company when they are a scam. If you feel that this is wrong to post this information please send me an email

I am one of those idiots who fell for the scam. Then the scammers come on YA and tell what a good deal it is. All I'm trying to do is prevent others form becoming and idiot

Good thing there are vigilent people on YA to try and stop others from losing their shirts.

Q&A: Du you think wikileaks is a terror organization?

Question by ZERO: Du you think wikileaks is a terror organization?
I am an american citizen and wikileaks had started to catch my attention.

this is what is stated on wikilinks home page

On Sunday 28th November 2010, Wikileaks began publishing 251,287 leaked United States embassy cables, the largest set of confidential documents ever to be released into the public domain. The documents will give people around the world an unprecedented insight into the US Government's foreign activities.
The cables, which date from 1966 to the end of February this year, contain confidential communications between 274 embassies in countries throughout the world and the State Department in Washington DC. 15,652 of the cables are classified Secret.

http://wikileaks.org/

Everyone has private things that they don’t want others to know. Privacy is one right that everyone deserves. Wikileaks is denying our government that right. There are many things that our enemies don’t need to know and they can know just by simply getting on the internet and going to that website.

Now I don’t see anything about secret documents from other countries being in there. I see a website that is leaking information that could put the U.S. in harm’s way of any terrorist. The world does not need to know this information. Yes we as citizens should know what the government is doing with all our tax money but leaking secret and classified information over the internet for everyone in the world to see it is not the way to go about the situation. The gov lets us have our privacy so let them have theirs. For our safety as American citizens we should not allow this website to post our nations private documents.

plz comment or respond your thoughts

if your not a citizens of the US
... think, what if your countrys private and top secret information was being leaked to all the people in the world. leaked to your enemys. How would that make you feel?
Thank you for your answers. This was a question in my debate classroom and i wanted to c the views and thoughts from some other people. I do not have alot of knowledge of this website and i will research more. that was me speaking off of the top of my head from what the general knowledge i obtained in around 5 mins

Is this a good idea to bring my girlfriend over?

Posted by admin

Question by Man with the Plan: Is this a good idea to bring my girlfriend over?
My girlfriend lives about 3-4 hours away from me. I want to bring over over for a whole weekend, since she is coming pretty far away to see me. However, at the moment I am living with my mother, and my mother doesn't really know my girlfriend, and is not comfortable with the idea of having a girl who she doesn't know come over for the weekend (Fri-Sun) to sleep over. Which I understand and respect. Besides that, my mother is VERY, VERY intrusive in my relationships, and I don't want my girlfriend to feel uncomfortable, plus, there's no privacy at the house so me and my girlfriend wouldn't be able to have any privacy of our own to be intimate (cuddling, having sex, etc).

However, I'm dying to brig my girlfriend over here to NYC to spend a weekend, especially since her parents were linient enough to let me stay at their domain for a weekend.

I'll feel kind of bad if I have to rent a little motel or stay at a hotel to bring her over for the weekend, until I move out (which I am in the process of). So I don't know if that's a good idea or that will be offensive to her.

I tried to talk to my mom, because I am an adult, and I do pay bills, take care of my younger siblings, and take care of all my other responsibilities. I even take care of my mother who is unemployed, and physically and mentally ill. Despite trying to explain this to her, my mother doesn't comply, and I can only respect since I am living in HER house.

So, I want to know if I rent out a hotel, or motel for the 3 days she comes down if that would be a bad idea? Or is it a good alternative? I know its a silly question, but I would appreciate some opinions. This is the first time I had a situation like this.

Thanks.

You should either rent a hotel room or wait until you have moved out on your own.

Important! Is the site Jamglue LEGAL if you download the remixes?

Question by Lovey: Important! Is the site Jamglue LEGAL if you download the remixes?
It is a free music download site and some people say its illegal if you download the tracks but if you download peoples remixes is that LEGAL?!?

the liscense for the songs are Attribution and it says:

You are free:
to Share — to copy, distribute and transmit the work
to Remix — to adapt the work
Under the following conditions:
Attribution — You must attribute the work in the manner specified by the author or licensor (but not in any way that suggests that they endorse you or your use of the work).
Attribute this work:

What does "Attribute this work" mean?
The page you came from contained embedded licensing metadata, including how the creator wishes to be attributed for re-use. You can use the HTML here to cite the work. Doing so will also include metadata on your page so that others can find the original work as well. With the understanding that:
Waiver — Any of the above conditions can be waived if you get permission from the copyright holder.
Public Domain — Where the work or any of its elements is in the public domain under applicable law, that status is in no way affected by the license.
Other Rights — In no way are any of the following rights affected by the license:
•Your fair dealing or fair use rights, or other applicable copyright exceptions and limitations;
•The author's moral rights;
•Rights other persons may have either in the work itself or in how the work is used, such as publicity or privacy rights.
Notice — For any reuse or distribution, you must make clear to others the license terms of this work. The best way to do this is with a link to this web page.

DOES THIS MEAN I CAN DOWNLOAD THE SONGS LEGALY?

Best answer:

Answer by evey.bane
I don't really get all that stuff you posted, but unless the remixes are made by the people who originally wrote the songs (or if the people who remixed it show that they have been given permission to do so by the songs' creators), I would say that it is still illegal, simply because it is illegal for someone to just take the songs as they please and make remixes of them, and then distribute the remixes.

the funny thing is that the research by a few YA TCs is better than the research by these guys. We located the scammers in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. We have their IP addresses and the name and contact information for their hosting company. Multiple reports have been filed with the BBB, eBay, Cars.com, Trust.com, autotrader.com and AOL cars for illegal use of their trademarks and logos.

I hope these guys all get 100 year in federal Pound-Me-In-the-A** Prison.
